My teachers were great cellists like Michel Roche (Utrecht Conservatory, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra) Ceacilia van Hoof (The Hague Philharmonic), Maria Starke (The Hague Philharmonic) Lucia Swarts (Royal Conservatory The Hague, Schönberg Ensemble, the ASKO Ensemble and the Amsterdam Bach Soloists and the Netherlands Bach Association Baroque Orchestra).
After my degree in music and cello at the Royal conservatory of The Hague, i started working as a educational manager with the The Hague Philharmonics. And after that i started doing about the same at the Philipshall / Lucent Danstheatre in The Hague. Music that makes my world go round. :-) Currently im working as a musicteacher in Elementary school which is a great great and thankful job. In september 2009 i start working 2 days doing education at the Rijswijkse Schouwburg as well, im looking forward to do so very much.
I try to play as much cello as i can in chamber ensembles, orchestras and recently with the Progressive Myth Rock formation Kingfisher Sky. With this great band i started a journey and as a guest band member now i play with them as the seventh bandmember. It's one of the most interesting and forfilling dreams that came trough during the last few years.
In 2001 Ivar de Graaf decided together with singer Judith Rijnveld to concentrate on combining both their influences into songs that didn't bound themselves to a specified genre or style. With influences like Porcupine Tree and Kate Bush, but also Classical singers as Cecilia Bartoli and traditional Folk music in their mind they started recording songs in their home studio in 2005.
When they finished seven songs they approached Suburban Records. Judith and Ivar and Eric Hoogendoorn (Bass) signed the deal in November 2006. They started recording their first album 'Hallway of Dreams' in May 2007 produced by Jochem Jacobs (Textures) and Bouke Visser (Split Second Sound). Kingfisher Sky's debutalbum 'Hallway of Dreams' was released in Oktober 2007 by Suburban Records. Suburban Records introduced Kingfisher Sky to SOZ Concerts and they started headlining in The Netherlands with the band they formed(Edo van der Kolk and Daan Janzing on Guitar and George van Olffen on Keys).
In March 2008 Laser’s Edge Records released their album in the United States and ‘Hallway of Dreams’ was released on Vinyl by Tonefloat Records. In August 2008 Disk Union released the album in Japan. ‘Hallway of Dreams’ became also available in the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Germany.
Kingfisher Sky has undegone a metamorphosis since their beginning.
During the Hallway of Dreams tour Maaike Peterse joined on cello and George and Daan have made way for David Gutierrez Rojas and Chris Henny.
Compositionally, the second CD is more adventurous than Hallway of Dreams. The prog influences are evident.
Where Hallway of Dreams is magical, transparent and reminiscent of the elements water and air, Skin of the Earth is a phoenix rising from its ashes, a cosmopolitan melting pot of influences reminiscent of the elements earth and fire.
The release for 'Skin of the Earth' will be on the 24th of August and the release party will be on the 18th of September in The Hague.
